Elizabeth Menezes was born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. She read Classics and French at St John’s College, Oxford, and spent a year in France working with people with learning difficulties before going to Trinity College of Music, London where she gained a Postgraduate Certificate and a Masters degree. On leaving College she became a full time member of The Carl Rosa Opera Company.
For Carl Rosa Opera she has so far played the roles of Phyllis (Iolanthe), Casilda (The Gondoliers) Josephine (HMS Pinafore), and all three little maids in The Mikado! Her work for Carl Rosa has taken her on tours of Australia, New Zealand, America and Canada as well as all over the UK and Ireland.
Outside Carl Rosa, Elizabeth regularly performs as a soloist for oratorio and operatic concerts. These have included concerts in St John’s, Smith Square, and the Fairfield Hall, Croydon. Operatic roles include Despina in Cosi fan tuttè (for Norvik Music) and Sr. Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites (for Trinity College.) For Grim’s Dyke Opera Co. she has performed the roles of Elsie (The Yeoman of the Guard) and Gianetta (The Gondoliers). She recently created the role of Fanny Ronalds in Fires of Straw by Janet Cowley and Barry Clark.
Oratorios include Rossini’s Messe Solennelle, Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Maria Theresa Mass. Forthcoming engagements include several roles for London Operetta. She often appears in concert with her brother, the tenor, David Menezes.
As a violinist she is a member of the Aspidistra Palm Court Orchestra (music@teatime.co.uk) and appears on both their recordings.
She also participates in education work for the Da Capo Foundation.
