Janet Cowley has adapted the memoirs of Miss Jessie Bond, the famous Victorian singer, into an intimate theatrical experience laced through with musical numbers.
Jessie was the creator of most of the mezzo-soprano roles in the G&S repertoire. She worked under the direct supervision of both Gilbert and Sullivan and thus had a unique view of the creation of the Savoy operas and of life backstage in the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.
This respected singer who saw life in Victorian and Edwardian England had a fascinating personal, as well as professional, life. She married twice, firstly as a result of an abduction and secondly, following a twelve-year courtship!
This work has been featured on BBC Radio Four’s ‘Woman’s Hour’.
Janet Cowley plays Jessie Bond while Barry Clark plays Gilbert, Sullivan, D’Oyly Carte and a myriad of other characters.
